    Kenikir is a tropical plant originating in Latin America, Central America, but grows wild and easily found in Florida, USA, as well as in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries. This species was brought to Southeast Asia throught the Philippines by Spain.

    Kenikir is a member of Asteraceae, When the yellow flowers are rarely used as ulam, the purple is a very popular salad vegetable eaten raw with rice or chopped with budu, chili, paste, tempoyak, and cincalok.

    Kenikir is an annual pipe-trunked plant with longitudinal lines. The height can reach 1 m and the leaves are long-stemmed and sit opposite leaves, so it is divided into 2 to 3 stems. It smells like rosin when squeezed. The flowers are arranged on a lot of nodules localed at the end of the stem and on the axillary top leaves, orange spotted yellow in the middle, and the seeds are in the shape of a beak.
