  • Descriptive text about Lawang Sewu:

Lawang Sewu is a historic building owned by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) which was originally used as the Head Office of the Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NISM) private railway. The Lawang Sewu building was built in stages on an area of 18,232 m2. The main building began on February 27, 1904 and was completed in July 1907. While the additional buildings were built around 1916 and completed in 1918.

The building was designed by Prof. Jakob F. Klinkhamer and B.J. Ouendag, an architect from Amsterdam with a dominant characteristic of curved and simple elements. The building is designed to resemble the letter L and has a large number of windows and doors as an air circulation system. Because of the large number of doors, the people named it Lawang Sewu which means a thousand doors.

In addition to its unique building design, Lawang Sewu has stained glass ornaments manufactured by Johannes Lourens Schouten. The stained glass tells about the prosperity and beauty of Java, the Dutch rule over Semarang and Batavia, maritime cities and the glory of the railroad. Other decorations on Lawang Sewu include pottery ornaments on the curved plane above the balcony, a small dome at the top of the water tower covered in copper, and the spire with bronze decoration.

As mentioned before, Lawang Sewu has a quite unique design with the main building shaped like the letter L. This uniqueness is reflected in the shape of the building which has Dutch characteristics but is made in such a way that it adapts to hot climatic conditions in the Semarang area. Doors and windows can be seen in every corner of the building, totaling about 928 doors. This is also related to the naming of the Lawang Sewu building, meaning a thousand doors because of the large number of them. This large number of course has a specific purpose, namely so that air circulation becomes smooth. The existing windows are also designed to maximize the air entering the room, in addition to the many doors.

Circulation regulation with ventilation, seems to be considered carefully using the principle of cross ventilation and elevating the ceiling of the building. There is also a tower building that also functions as an air vent while adding to the aesthetic impression of the Lawang Sewu building. In addition, the number of openings (doors, windows, and ventilation) can maximize the lighting of the Lawang Sewu building so that it still looks bright without lights during the day. Lighting is also obtained in a room that has stained glass in it, facing the direction of the rising sun.

The unique side of this cultural heritage is that it has a basement that is said to hold mystical stories. Apart from that, it turns out that the basement is designed as a drainage system or water channel. In the rainy season, this basement serves to store rainwater so that it does not inundate the building's yard or building. Another function of this basement is also as air conditioning above it, namely the main building of Lawang Sewu.

With the provision of such designed windows, doors, ventilation, and basement rooms, it is not surprising that this is what makes Lawang Sewu as a landmark of Semarang City feels cool even though it does not use air conditioning. The architectural intelligence that designed this tropical building deserves our appreciation today by continuing to visit, maintain, protect, and preserve the Lawang Sewu building.

Currently the Lawang Sewu Building is used as a museum that presents various collections from time to time for railways in Indonesia. The collections on display include: Alkmaar collections, Edmonson machines, Computing Machines, Typewriters, Steam Locomotive Replicas, Securities and others. Lawang Sewu presents the process of restoring the Lawang Sewu building which consists of photos, videos, and restoration materials. Approaching the exit, there is a library filled with books about trains.

In addition to being a historical tourist spot, Lawang Sewu building can also be rented for exhibition activities, meeting rooms, photo shoots, shooting, wedding parties, festivals, bazaars, art performances, workshops, etc.
